Frequently Asked Questions

How can we calculate cycle time or lead time in Clubhouse?

We don't currently have a way to get cycle or lead time information inside the Clubhouse app, but we are tracking interest in this feature. In the meantime, our Beta API can help you to access cycle and/or lead time for Stories, Epics, and Milestones.

Here's what we use to calculate cycle time and lead time:

Average cycle time: The average time between when a Story is moved into a "Started" workflow state until it is moved into a "Done" workflow state. For Epics, this is the average for all Stories in that Epic. On the Milestone level, this represents the average of all Stories across all Epics in that Milestone.

Average lead time: The average time between when a Story is first created to when it is completed. Similarly, for Epics this is the average for all Stories in that Epic. On the Milestone level, this represents the average of all Stories across all Epics in that Milestone.

Epics and Milestones have average lead and cycle time in the EpicsStats and MilestoneStats arrays. Completed Stories have a calculated value for cycle_time and lead_time. All of the cycle_time and lead_time values are in seconds.

Stories also have a started_at and completed_at timestamp that might be useful if you want to see dates. These dates are also included in CSV Exports and can be used to calculate a Story's cycle time.

You can also use our API to visualize Story data in Google Charts. We've got an open source tool for that, which you can check out here. There are already some chart templates provided (including Project cycle time in days), but if it doesn't have the one you're looking for, you may be able to create it using the tool.

It might take a little engineering work, but those should help you get the data you're most interested in. We're here to help if other questions come up while you're using the API!
